Boroujerdi urges Iran-Turkey swift response to KRG issue

TEHRAN, Oct. 17 (MNA) – Senior MP Boroujerdi called for Iran and Turkey's swift response in addressing the need for preserving Iraq’s territorial integrity following Kurdistan region’s insistence on separation.

Head of the Parliament’s National Security and Foreign Policy Commission Alaeddin Boroujerdi held talks on bilateral and regional issues with Turkish Parliamentary National Defense Committee head Yusuf Beyazıt in Tehran on Monday.

Boroujerdi voiced concern over the current situation in the Iraqi Kurdistan region, highlighting Iran’s principled policy on defending the territorial integrity of Iraq; “Iran and Turkey need to use every single capacity to resolve this issue as soon as possible, because preserving the territorial integrity of regional countries is a highly significant principle.”

Boroujerdi then discussed US president’s remarks on the Iran’s nuclear deal, saying “Donald Trump’s remarks once again proved that the American government cannot be trusted.”

“Washington’s treatment of the nuclear deal encourages the views of countries such as North Korea,” he stressed.

Yusuf Beyazıt, who also heads Turkey-Iran Parliamentary Friendship Group, noted the two countries’ common stances on issues related to Iraq, Syria and Palestine, adding “KRG moves will no doubt cause problems for Iran and Turkey. It is clear that the US and Israeli regime are behind the Kurdistan region’s move for splitting from Iraq.”

He went on to stress that Turkey’s reaction toward KRG issue would be “decisive”.

Beyazıt further voiced his country’s support for the Iran nuclear deal, and the interest in keeping the borders of the two countries open full-time, increasing economic exchanges and expanding political relations, providing finance and facilitating banking cooperation.

“We are hoping that the level of trade transactions between the two countries will reach the $30 billion that was determined during President Rouhani’s visit to Turkey,” he added.
